Northcote High School is committed to working positively and progressively with our teachers, students and families so that they develop a sense of belonging to the school community.
We like to ensure an ongoing ‘real’ dialogue is maintained between everyone so that improved home/school communication and participation will further enhance our connection with our community.
We have a vibrant student population of around 1800 students and are committed to maintaining our role as a non-selective neighbourhood school with a focus on achieving success for all its students. At Year 7 level, NHS traditionally enrols about 300 students each year with the vast majority living locally to NHS or with siblings already enrolled. This includes parts of the suburbs of Northcote, Thornbury, East Brunswick, North Fitzroy and Fairfield.
Our student demographic closely reflects the surrounding area in almost every way. A good majority of local primary schools choose NHS as their preferred high school for their children, and there is always strong interest from other suburbs with applications from more than 30 different primary schools.
Surveys conducted with NHS' parent community demonstrated that a large proportion of our parents worked in health services, education, administration and managerial positions, media/arts and food services. Steady proportions were self-employed, worked in skilled trades, the IT industry and emergency services.
Some of the inner northern suburbs of Melbourne have undergone significant demographic changes over the last 15 years and this change is reflected in our school. To compare demographically similar schools, please view Northcote High School’s entry on the Federal Government My School Website Demographically, the closest comparable Victorian government secondary schools to NHS are Glen Waverley SC and Brighton SC.
