SUBJECT: ESL YEAR 7 & 8

THE PURPOSE OF THE COURSE:
The E.S.L. Programme provides more recently arrived non - English speaking background (NESB) students with a course that improves their level of competency in the English language in all skill areas. This gives them the opportunity to succeed in the mainstream classroom and society. The use of Information and Communication Technology is an important component of the course.

The E.S.L. Support Programme is an integral aspect of the overall course and caters for E.S.L. students in mainstream classes. It aims to assist students with the language component / content of the various Key Learning Areas.

THE CONTENT OF THE COURSE:

  • The skills for listening, speaking, reading and writing in English are emphasised in each class
  • Students read and respond to set novels, short stories, poetry and film, both orally and in writing. Students are exposed to a wide range of genres of writing and build a folio of creative and structured writing
  • Current issues are discussed and reported on, using both television current affairs presentations and newspaper articles
  • Students improve their mastery of the linguistic structures and features of the English language
  • The development of oral proficiency and improved communication skills in the use of the English language is an important component of all aspects of the course
  • The use of the Internet in conjunction with library resources is promoted within the course in order to develop research skills
  • Competency and confidence in the use of Information and Communication Technology is integrated within the course
  • E.S.L. students are actively involved in the Integrated Curriculum Programme
