SUBJECT: GEOGRAPHY YEAR 7
THE PURPOSE OF THE COURSE:
Geography at Year 7 is designed to:
- Develop geographical skills of observation, data collection,
collation, representation and presentation and analysis
- Understand and apply key geographic ideas of location, distribution,
movement, scale and spatial change over time
- Understand the relationship between humans and their environment
- Understand key features of Australia's natural environment
- Work co-operatively in groups
THE CONTENT OF THE COURSE:
The course units address the following CSF II Curriculum Focus Areas:
- application of geographical techniques, including representation
of data and use of mapping conventions and interpreting topographic
maps
- the characteristics of different places in terms of location
and geographic characteristics
- the major features and processes that change environments
- the extent to which people and environments affect each other
Unit 1 Areas covered:
What is Geography? - Skills of the Geographer
- What is a map?
- Using aerial photographs, topographic and contour maps
- Describing places using distance and directions
- Using an atlas and Melways directory
Unit 2 Areas covered:
Australia's Natural Environment
- Australian Environments - An Introduction
- Continents
- Climate and Vegetation
- Natural and Human Environment
- Bushfires
THE ASSESSMENT IN THE COURSE:
- Workbook (class based activities, notes, homework tasks)
- Project - Fantasy Island Map
- Test on Mapping and Direction or test on Australia's Natural
Environment
- Multimedia project on Australia's natural environment (optional)

- To enhance the understanding of the relationship between humans
and their environment
- Understand key features of Australia's natural environment
- Work co-operatively in groups
