SUBJECT: MATERIALS AND SYSTEMS YEAR
7 & 8
THE PURPOSE OF THE COURSE:
Students at Year 7 and 8 are given a broad introduction into
Technology Studies. Wood and acrylics are used in the production
of models. Design constraints and consideration are set for each
model. A computer aided design program is used in the design process.
Students also complete a unit on electronics. In year seven the
three areas of study, materials, electronics and computer aided
design are integrated and taught by the same teacher. Students also
build simple electronic models requiring them to us a variety of
electronic components, PC boards and soldering.
At the end of this course students should be able to:
- Understand how technology is an integral part of our lives
- Be able to identify the characteristics of softwoods and hardwoods
- Be aware of how softwoods and hardwoods are harvested and develop
an awareness of environmental consideration
- Use a wide variety of hand tools, machines and equipment safely
and competently
- Use production techniques and materials safely in their own
work
- Use computer aided design at a level appropriate to their maturity
- Understand how to control and manipulate simple outputs
- Use an electric soldering iron and electronic components to
build a sound device
- Work cooperatively on a class production
- Develop a sense of self worth through classroom activities
- Develop skill and interest that can lead to personal and vocational
interests
