SUBJECT: TECHNOLOGY - TEXTILES YEAR 8

THE PURPOSE OF THE COURSE:
Textiles introduces students to a wide range of activities related to the production and construction of textile articles using the appropriate equipment. Students are encouraged to express their own creative possibilities. The course aims to provide students with experiences that encourage interpretation of technical information, and the chance to experiment, make decisions and evaluate their results.

THE CONTENT OF THE COURSE:

  • Recognition and understanding of various manufactured and natural fibres
  • Correct and safe use of tools and equipment. This includes the use of a sewing machine, threading the machine, selection of stitches and the iron
  • Selection of fibres and fabric for particular purposes
  • Cutting, joining and constructing of fabric to produce articles or clothing
  • Experimentation with machine / hand stitching, applique / dyes to enrich a fabric / fabric paints
  • Use of measurements
  • Ability to read and interpret simple pattern instructions

Homework tasks:

Some folio and written work will be set as homework. The teacher may request certain construction processes are worked on at home.
