We have a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) 1:1 Program where it is compulsory for all students to have a portable digital device (laptop, notebook or tablet) that meets minimum requirements and specifications.
These devices are family-owned and it is the responsibility of families to arrange for appropriate warranty and insurance cover to protect the device. Northcote High School assumes no responsibility for the loss or damage of devices.
For more information about using devices for learning, see Digital learning.
Devices in 2018
We are in the process of phasing out iPads and introducing touchscreen notebooks for our Year 7 and 8 students.
Year 7 students
From 2018, students in Year 7 are required to have a touchscreen notebook specified by the school. They can use this device up to Year 12.
Families purchase this device and accessories through the Centre Com online portal. Details are provided to all Year 7 students and families when they enrol. Technical support, extended warranties and insurance can also be arranged through the Centre Com portal.
Year 8 students
In 2018, Year 8 students are required to use the iPad they purchased in Year 7. They can continue to use this device in Years 9–12 (as long as it meets our minimum requirements).
From 2019, Year 8 students are required to use the touchscreen notebook they purchased in Year 7.
Year 9– 12 students
Students in Years 9–12 can chose a device (laptop or tablet) that meets our minimum requirements and specifications.
For Year 7 students who started in 2017, this device can be their iPad, and for Year 7 students who started in 2018, this can be their touchscreen notebook.
Students are provided with free school-licensed and government-provided software for their device. If students want to use other software for school work, then families can choose to purchase and install it, including updates and licences.
Games are not to be played or downloaded on the device at school.
Storage and charging
Students are required to have a protective case for their device and store it in their locker during recess, lunch and physical education and other practical classes.
All devices must be charged overnight at home and be fully charged at the start of each school day. It is not possible to charge devices at school.
Network and internet access
The school has a robust network that is maintained by a full-time network manager and technical support team. Students have access to the internet at school for educational purposes only.
The school required software and digital textbooks, once downloaded, can be accessed without using the internet.
Families experiencing financial hardship with purchasing books and devices are encouraged to contact the school to discuss their circumstances and the support available.
