Wonderful VCE results for 2011!

The highest ATAR score achieved by one of our VCE International Students in 2011 was 98.4, by Phuong Dao (below). She said "Im a bit sad about leaving Northcote, it was like my second family." She heads off to study Commerce at Melbourne University. An all time record of 50% of our International students achieved ATARs over 90, while 80% achieved ATARs over 70! Congratulations to all our international students on another remarkable year!

International Students at Northcote

As one of the first schools accredited by the Education Department of Victoria to take international students, we have successfully developed a comprehensive program for many young students and their families worldwide. Northcote is proud of the accomplishments and achievements of our overseas students and the connections and support we have been able to provide.

In recent years we have welcomed students from China, Vietnam, Thailand, Italy, Germany, Korea, India, Japan, Brazil, Columbia and the Solomon Islands studying at the school. At Northcote, International students learn to experience a different culture, improve their skills in English language and make new friends, while at the same time opening up the world by increasing their career opportunities.

Northcote High School 's International Program

With about 80 International students engaged in study, Northcote High School is undeniably the first choice for overseas students living in the northern suburbs of Melbourne. Less than 4 kilometres from the centre of Melbourne, well serviced by public transport and within easy travelling distance of shops, cafes, libraries and Universities, Northcote boasts an International student program that is well integrated into the broader school community and provides very strong support and guidance.

On arriving in Melbourne, students begin a 20-week intensive English course at an English Language Centre, then join mainstream classes at Northcote High School.

Support from Our School

Northcote provides an intensive English as a Second Language (ESL) program for students from a non-English speaking background. On arrival, we provide an orientation program to introduce the student to our school. We also have an International Student Coordinator, a program support officer and two Assistant Principals dedicated to the program. Students also have access to the VCE Coordinator and Careers Counsellor. There is a purpose built centre for the international program, as well as a modern library and senior study centre, and computer facilities throughout the school.

All Northcote’s International students live with Australian homestay families. The family provide support and room and board. These homestay families are arranged and coordinated through the school. Our school also arranges pick up from Melbourne airport. The school also offers after school tutorials for some subjects, and end of year extra English and Maths classes for International students at some levels. Sometimes the school runs trips for International students to our camp site at Boho.

Please note: Northcote High School requires ALL International students of ANY age to be living with a homestay approved by the school. Under NO circumstances will the school enrol students who are living independently.

How to Enrol

If you are interested in enrolling at Northcote High School you should contact an Agent in your city. If you don't know which Agent to go to, contact our office, we can suggest one near where you live. Applications for enrolment as an International Student at Northcote High School are made through the International Student Unit of the Department of Education, Victoria, Australia. Students wishing to attend Northcote High School should nominate this school as their preferred High School. Please note that Northcote only accepts International Students at Years 11 and 12. The earliest enrolment possible is in the second half of Year 10.
